Pool owners may think that when the cooler temps come, they can just skip weekly pool care until the spring. NOT A GOOD IDEA! Pool maintenance should be done year-round – not just in the warmer months.

TIPS TO MAINTAIN YOUR POOL DURING WINTER IN FLORIDA

  1. REMOVE POOL TOYS and accessories from the pool. Store them in a dry place to prevent them from collecting mold or mildew.

  2. KEEP AN EYE ON WATER LEVELS – This is one of the biggest winter pool maintenance concerns. We have less rain in the winter to replace evaporated water, and along with the cool, dry air will cause the level in your pool to drop as much as one to two inches in a week. If your pool loses too much water, it can shift the balance of the pool chemistry. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye your pool’s water level and add water as needed and keep it above the skimmer.

  3. MAINTAIN THE WATER BALANCE – We look forward to Florida’s cooler winter days, but algae thrives in pools during this time due to fluctuating temperatures. Keep your pump running 4-6 hours per day and test the water weekly. Chlorine levels can be reduced slightly since water temps will be lower and fewer people are using the pool. If you see the start of algae in your pool, treat it promptly before it gets out of control.

  4. CONTINUE TO CLEAN YOUR POOL -- Even if you’re using your pool less or not at all, is still crucial to continue pool maintenance: removing leaves and debris from the water and cleaning the debris traps or skimmers. Your pool pump should continue to run and you should regularly vacuum the pool to keep it free of debris which can stain your pool surface and promote algae growth. This will help you to maintain a healthy water balance and keep it clean for spring.

When your pool is properly maintained throughout the winter, it will be ready for the first swimming-day of the year. Without regular service, you may not realize you have issues until swimming season begins.
